TEACHING

Alexis-Carlota Cochrane’s teaching critically explores the intersections of technology, power, and identity through feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, and queer perspectives.

She encourage students to examine the ways in which digital technologies, systems and platforms reinforce or challenge existing structures of power. By fostering an environment of critical inquiry and interdisciplinary engagement, Alexis-Carlota’s goal is to equip students with the analytical tools to not only navigate but also actively reshape digital spaces in ways that promote equity and justice.

Teaching Experience:

Instructor of Record:

CMST4M03: Communication, Culture and Technology, McMaster University (Fall 2024)

This seminar engaged students with foundation works recalling how technological affordances are intertwined with race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and other forms of identity. We considered critical questions such as: who were technologies designed for? Who has technological decision-making power? And who is at risk within technological systems and processes?

“I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this class, and it was all because of Professor Cochrane. Professor Cochrane offered an exhaustive overview of what could seem like a very broad topic of communication, culture & technology. I would also like to express my gratitude for Professor Cochrane's encouragement and genuine interest in my success as a student.”

“[Aspects of the course I found valuable were] thinking critically about the hidden aspects of digital media such as algorithms and surveillance capitalism and understanding the ways in which digital media may exclude minority populations.”

“This is an excellent course with many valuable critical approaches to thinking about the underlying issues common in online spaces.”
